Styliana Apostolou

Hey Styliana, tell us a bit about yourself

I’m a freelance dancer, choreographer and multidisciplinary artist from Cyprus. I started choreographing solo performances and research movement around 2017. I studied in Holland, Codarts for two years and I lived in Holland since 2014. Last year I participated in the dance Biennale in Venice and this year I’m currently based in Cyprus for a while. I’m interested in movies, philosophy, art performance, society, humanities and the human body.

What are your thoughts for our upcoming event “Rebuild the fire” ?
I’m quite curious to work with new people and try to express the concept of the event along a fashion
presentation. I think there is something about outdoor performances and nice work will come out of
this.

How would you rebuild the fire after a challenging time?
I think after a challenging time is good to remind yourself who you are, and focus on healing. Trying
something you are afraid of and reminding your self the reasons to keep on fighting or why you started
in the first place.

What is the most challenging thing for you as an artist?

I think the most challenging thing for me as an artist is to find inspiration to reinvent my self after I’m
done with a ‘’phase’’ or a piece I was working with for a while. The in between moments of process and
letting go, also sometimes when I try to explain to people what I do for living. Hehe

What are you currently listening to?
I listen to Tame Impala, Daft Punk, Kraftwerk and Brian Eno a lot lately.

Currently reading?
A book from Virginia Wolf called A room of one’s own.

What does intimacy mean for you?

Intimacy for me means to be able to be raw and ugly in front of others yet to feel welcomed to be whatever. So to grow in an unknown territory.

What grounds you?
The sea, or biking, or meditating, or dancing.

Do you have any self care rituals?
I like to put olive oil on my hair sometimes. Going out by myself I think is consider my self care too.

How is a relaxing day at home for you?
Having to do nothing, lots of sleeping, ordering food and watching a good movie sometimes listening to meditation or ambient music whole day and sleeping again.
